California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Automated Vehicle Regulations

Interest in automated vehicles continues to grow as tech giants and automotive companies regularly unveil the latest advances for vehicles and automation. In 2012, California became the fourth state to pass legislation in regards to the testing and use of automated vehicles on public roadways. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was tasked with developing specific regulations by January 2015. PATH is assisting the DMV with this task by developing functional and technical definitions and providing technical advice to the DMV to support their work drafting specific regulations and policies to help govern the testing, registration, and safe operation of autonomous vehicles.
