Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Systems

Intersection crashers are some of the most complicated to avoid because of the complexity of the vehicle interactions that occur. None more so than the unprotected left turn, in which the driver must judge whether there is adequate time for completing the turn before opposing traffic arrives. PATH researchers are developing a driver warning system with vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) and infrastructure to vehicle (I2V) capabilities to alert drivers if there is sufficient time for the vehicle to complete the turn. A system prototype was tested at the Richmond Field Station with favorable results. Researchers are now developing the driver interface and testing the system under a wider range of conditions.
