Developed by U.S. DOT at the end of 2010, the Applications for the Environment - Real-time Information Synthesis (AERIS) initiative was created with the goal of researching and deploying "interoperable technologies and applications that reduce the negative impacts of transportation on the environment," (U.S. DOT).
One of the program's first objectives was to understand the activities already undertaken or planned in Europe and Asia using ITS technologies to improve the environment and/or reduce CO2 emissions. PATH partnered with U.S. DOT to develop a knowledge base of international activities and to help define what activities AERIS could be sponsoring to build upon existing research, create collaborative opportunities and identify new niches where the US can establish a leadership role.
